Grown in the lush hills of Chikmagalur, India, this medium roast coffee comes from Ratnagiri Estate, a remarkable farm stewarded by Ashok and Divya Patre. For nearly a century, the Patre family has cared for this land, cultivating both fine pepper and exceptional coffee across 108 hectares at an elevation of 1,340 meters above sea level. Today, Ashok Patre—representing the third generation—combines deep respect for tradition with a forward-thinking, science-driven approach to coffee production.
Ratnagiri Estate is widely regarded as one of the most impressive coffee operations not only in India, but anywhere in the specialty coffee world. Ashok Patre understands the unique character of Indian terroir and works intentionally to highlight it through meticulous processing. Rather than forcing the coffee to mimic other origins, he embraces its inherent qualities and refines them with extraordinary precision.
This coffee undergoes a washed process with an extended and carefully controlled fermentation. The cherries are fermented whole for 48 hours, then depulped and fermented again for 36 hours using microbe-enriched mosto. After washing, the coffee is slow-dried on raised beds for 20 days, allowing flavors to fully stabilize and develop. While such complex processing can sometimes overwhelm a coffee, Ratnagiri’s results are strikingly clean, balanced, and expressive.
In the cup, this medium roast showcases clarity and depth, offering a refined expression of Indian specialty coffee. Expect a smooth body, layered complexity, and a finish that feels both elegant and distinctive. It’s a coffee shaped by patience, precision, and decades of stewardship—one we’re proud to share and confident will leave a lasting impression.
